Congratulations, you’ve successfully received your Italian Digital Nomad Visa! 🎉 That’s a huge first step in setting up your life in Italy. But your journey doesn’t stop there. Once you arrive, the next essential step is applying for your permesso di soggiorno (residency card).
This process can feel complex, with multiple stages and a few hidden pitfalls. In this post, I’ll share exactly what I did, including one mistake you’ll want to avoid, along with tips no one told me that made everything easier.
Step 1: Arriving in Italy With Your Visa
When you land in Italy, your visa gets you into the country legally. But it doesn’t automatically give you residency status. For that, you need to start the permesso di soggiorno process right away.
Step 2: Visit Poste Italiane
Your first stop is Poste Italiane (the post office). Here you’ll:
- Pick up the permesso di soggiorno application kit
- Fill out the forms (yes, all in Italian- be patient!)
- Attach the required documents, including copies of your passport, visa, proof of income, health insurance, and address in Italy
You’ll also need to purchase a marca da bollo (revenue stamp), which you can buy at a tabaccheria.
Step 3: Completing the Application & Booking Your Appointment
Once your kit is complete, you’ll submit it back at the post office. They’ll give you a receipt (keep this safe- it’s proof you’re legal in Italy while waiting for your card).
The Poste Italiane system automatically books your appointment with the Questura (police headquarters) in your region.
Step 4: Very Important Info!
One detail that often surprises people: the date of your Questura appointment can be months away. Don’t panic, your post office receipt is valid proof of your stay while you wait. Always carry it with your passport.
Step 5: Your Questura Appointment
At the Questura, you’ll:
- Have your fingerprints taken
- Provide additional documents if requested
- Answer questions about your application
This step can feel intimidating, but if you’re well-prepared, it’s usually straightforward.
Top Tips for a Smooth Experience
- Tip #1: Make photocopies of everything. Bring duplicates of every document just in case.
- Tip #2: Arrive on time to your Questura appointment- queues can be long, and they rarely operate on time so be prepared to wait regardless
- Tip #3: Be patient. Italian bureaucracy moves slowly, and delays are normal. Take a book, take a deep breath, and remember- you’re building your new life in Italy.
My Big Mistake (So You Don’t Repeat It)
I forgot to make copies of all of my certificates and documents before handing them in with my visa application. I haven’t received the originals back so I then had to apply for copies of them all ready for the Questura appointment. A costly and time draining mistake!
