A personal note from Debs…

When people think of moving to Italy, the first images that come to mind are the obvious ones: the sparkling lakes, cobblestone streets, long dinners under twinkling lights, and mornings spent sipping cappuccinos in piazzas. And yes, that part is real. It’s why so many of us feel the pull.
But what most people don’t talk about is the other side of the story.
The paperwork.
The waiting.
The moments of loneliness when you don’t yet have your people.
The cultural differences that can make you question whether you belong.
When I first moved here, I quickly realised that living in Italy is a beautiful paradox: it’s both soul-filling and, at times, soul-stretching.
A Personal Journey
I came to Italy because my heart called me here. It wasn’t just about a location on a map; it was about saying yes to a way of living that felt more aligned with who I am. But as romantic as that sounds, the reality of starting over in a new country was anything but simple.
I remember sitting in government offices, clutching my forms, and hoping I had the right documents. I remember navigating conversations in Italian with Google Translate open on my phone. I remember those quiet evenings where I questioned whether I had made the right decision.
And yet, through it all, something deeper kept whispering: This is where you’re meant to be.
Why Share This Now
Over the past few years, I’ve realised that so many of us are craving a similar shift- to live more slowly, to root more deeply, to create a life built on meaning rather than just achievement. For many, Italy represents that dream.
But dreams need structure to take shape. And I don’t believe anyone should have to choose between longing for a new life and feeling lost in the logistics.
That’s why I created Life on Lake Como: a space where both can coexist.
✨ The beauty and the bureaucracy.
✨ The longing and the logistics.
✨ The everyday reality and the extraordinary possibility.
My Unique Take on the Expat Journey
I’m not here to tell you how to “do Italy the right way.” There isn’t one.
Instead, I want to share what I’ve learned, what I’m still figuring out, and the resources that can make your journey smoother. But beyond that, I want to speak to the heart of this move: the courage it takes to say yes to yourself, and the way belonging is something we build, not just stumble into.
Italy isn’t just a destination. It’s a mirror- reflecting back who we are when we dare to slow down, savour beauty, and choose a different path.
Where We Begin
The first step in sharing this vision is the Italy Relocation Starter Guide. It’s a practical, no-fluff resource for visas, housing, residency, and those foundational questions that every expat faces. But it’s also more than a guide: it’s an invitation.
An invitation to believe that this isn’t just possible, it’s doable.
An invitation to step into a story that blends the magic of Italy with the truth of your own unfolding.
This is only the beginning of what I hope Life on Lake Como becomes: a home for dreamers, doers, and anyone brave enough to imagine a life beyond the ordinary.
If your heart is whispering, “maybe me, maybe Italy,” I’d love to walk alongside you.
